Operative Gold Standard

A benignly enlarged prostate with treatment-requiring lower urinary tract symptoms – benign prostatic hyperplasia – is one of the most common benign diseases in men.

A bladder tumor is the fourth most common type of cancer in men and affects women as well. Bladder tumors that are detected and treated early have a relatively favorable course of the disease. Currently, bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate and bladder (TUR-P/TUR-B) is the operative gold standard for these treatments.

SURGERY

At ATOMOS Klinik Währing, we can offer you the TUR-P or the TUR-B using endoscopic surgery through the urethra without an external cut – both for benign prostate enlargement and bladder tumor or bladder neck constriction with the most modern, gentle, and minimally invasive technology, the bipolar transurethral video resection.

Procedure of a TUR

The bipolar TUR can be performed under general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia. During the procedure, an optical instrument (resectoscope) and an electrical loop are inserted through the urethra. With the loop, the enlarged tissue inside the prostate (or the bladder tumor) is removed, and the outflow from the bladder is restored. Bleeding from opened vessels is controlled with electrical current. After the procedure, a permanent catheter with a rinse solution for bladder irrigation is inserted and left in for a few days. After the catheter is removed, bladder emptying is unobstructed and with a good urine flow.
The technology used allows for the greatest possible protection of the urethral sphincter. Additional benefits of the bipolar video resection technique include preserved erectile function, low blood loss, and shorter convalescence due to the shorter duration of the operation.

You can usually leave the hospital the day after the procedure.
