Prof. Dr. Benedikt Weber, head of the vein outpatient clinic at AKH Wien and a specialist in dermatology and angiology, is a distinguished expert in the field of venous diseases at the ATOMOS Klinik Währing. He specializes in the gentle, minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins, including endovenous laser therapy.
Venous diseases are among the most common circulatory system disorders and are divided into three main forms. ATOMOS Klinik Währing offers diagnosis and therapy for the full spectrum of venous and lymphatic system diseases.
Varicose veins (known as ‘varices’) are not only a cosmetic issue for patients. They are associated with numerous long-term consequences, such as thrombosis or skin changes up to ulcers. Besides visible varicose veins and spider veins, especially leg pain and/or swollen legs are indications of underlying venous insufficiency. Varicose veins primarily develop due to a weakness in the connective tissue and become more common with increasing age.
Thrombosis leads to an obstruction of venous blood vessels and consequently results in a drainage disorder of blood from the affected extremity. Typical symptoms are pain, swelling, or bluish discoloration.
In the long term, the drainage disorder can also lead to the formation of varicose veins and skin ulcers, which often require treatment.
Venous malformations represent a rarer, more severe form of venous diseases. They generally require particularly careful examination and often a multidisciplinary therapy.
The surgical treatment of varicose veins in our competence center is primarily performed using endovenous laser surgery. Of course, other modern therapy methods for stage-appropriate treatment of varicose veins are available. The selection of the appropriate surgical method is discussed in advance in the vein outpatient clinic and decided together with you.
The operation is usually performed under general anesthesia or sedation but can also be performed under local anesthesia. The procedure itself rarely takes longer than 60 minutes. Outpatient treatment (meaning discharge on the same day as the surgery) is possible in many cases for varicose vein procedures. If a postoperative inpatient stay is required, this can certainly take place at our clinic.
