Catathymic Imaginative Psychotherapy

A warm welcome!

Sometimes you feel like something is missing.
Sometimes you need something.
And sometimes you’re looking for something.

I would be delighted to accompany you on part of your journey.

Psychotherapy method – KIP

This psychotherapeutic method is known as ‘catathymic image psychotherapy’ (formerly ‘catathymic image therapy’).

„Everything you can imagine is real.“
— Pablo Picasso

This method involves, amongst other things, working with images that may represent inner experiences, feelings or even conflicts. These inner images (also known as visualisations or daydreams) help to achieve the relevant therapeutic goals.

The word ‘katathym’ is derived from the Ancient Greek katá (‘according to’, ‘in accordance with’) and thymós (‘soul’, ‘breath of life’, ‘courage’).

In ancient Greek philosophy and literature, thymós is regarded as the very seat of the combative life force – that inner drive which moves and propels a person forward. The name thus reflects the deep connection between imagery and the world of lived emotions.

The exploration of the client’s life stages and current life situation, as well as the addressing of current problems, takes place on the one hand at a symbolic level through therapeutically guided inner images and ideas, and on the other hand through therapeutic conversations, in order to understand unconscious motivations, feelings, conflicts and relationship patterns. In this way, inner experiences and emotional states can be symbolically represented, experienced and understood within the therapeutic process, which serves the aim of the therapy.

When can psychotherapy help, for example?

  • Begleitung in Lebensphasen und Bearbeitung von Erlebnissen
  • Support through the different stages of life and processing of experiences
  • Change and grief
  • Fears
  • Compulsive behaviour patterns
  • Depression
  • Relationship conflicts of all kinds and issues relating to sexuality
  • Physical symptoms and their psychological effects or causes (somatoform disorders / psychosomatic disorders)
